Campaign Blockage: Court orders NCC to pay N500m damages to APC

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered the Nigerian Communications Commission to pay the All Progressives Congress N500 million as damages for unlawfully banning the party’s presidential campaign fund-raising platform.
Justice Ibrahim Buba gave the order in his judgment following a suit filed by the APC against the NCC and Etisalat, MTN Nigeria, Globacom, Airtel Nigeria and Visafone Communications.
The judge, in his judgment, held that the APC was protected by the constitution to pursue the enforcement of its fundamental rights once they were violated.
Mr. Buba, thereafter, dismissed NCC’s counter affidavit and ruled that the actions of the respondents were illegal and unconstitutional.
The judge held that the damages were to be paid jointly and severally by all the respondents.
The political party had sued the commission, demanding N25bn as damages, for allegedly banning its presidential campaign fund-raising platform.
The APC had accused the NCC of instructing the 2nd to 6th respondents to discontinue an SMS platform it created for the purpose of getting donations from willing members of the public for its presidential campaign.
The party claimed to have initiated the participatory fund-raising platform as a way of getting every member of the general public to contribute N100 to its presidential campaign fund each time they sent APC as an SMS to 35350.
The APC had deposed to an affidavit stating that within few hours of launching the strategy, the party was getting about four to five text messages in a minute and had received a total of 5,400 SMS before the NCC directed the telecommunications service providers to discontinue the scheme.
The party, however, claimed that NCC, in a letter dated January 19, instructed the other respondents to shut down the platform, warning them “to avoid running political advertisement/promotions that will portray them as being partisan”.
The APC said the commission also threatened to sanction any of the telecommunication service providers which failed to comply with its order.
The party, however, considered the NCC’s instruction and the consequent shutting down of its fund-raising platform as both discriminatory and an infringement on its fundamental rights as protected by Section 39 of the Constitution and Articles 9 (1) (2) and 19 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act, Cap A9, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
It argued that NCC did not give the same instruction to the other respondents when the Peoples Democratic Party set up such short code which was managed by one Wagitel Communications Ltd., to raise funds for the campaign of the party in 2010.

Jonathan pledges additional state for South-East

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said he would ensure that South-East got equal number of states with other geopolitical zones in the country, if re-elected.
Mr. Jonathan made the pledge at the secretariat of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Owerri, where he was received by royal fathers in the state.
According to him, before other zones will talk of getting more states, the people of South-East must first get one additional state to bring them at par with other geopolitical zones.
Each of the six geo-political zones in the country has six states except South-East with five states and North-East with seven states.
Mr. Jonathan, who described the people of South-East as his ‘’taproot at the national level’’, said he was delighted at the level of support he enjoyed from the zone.
He said his visit to the royal fathers was to solicit their prayers and support ahead of Saturday’s presidential elections, and urged the people to vote for him and other PDP candidates.
Earlier, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, the Chairman of the traditional rulers’ council, told Mr. Jonathan that South-East people were highly expectant of additional states, in addition to looking forward to enjoying other benefits of democracy.
He urged the president to go ahead with his good work, adding that his transformational leadership was highly felt by Nigerians.

Buhari’s Eligibility: Court Adjourns Hearing Till April 22, 23

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned hearing in all cases questioning retired General Muhammadu Buhari’s eligibility to contest in the 2015 presidential elections, to the 22nd and 23rd of April. The court also dismissed the application filed by two other parties one Ebunoluwa Adegoruwa, a human rights activists and another Chukwuma Ochu seeking to be joined in the suit.
Trial judge, Justice Adeniyi Ademola said the applicants are no more than meddlesome interlopers seeking to waste the time of the court and as such their applications concerning Buhari’s eligibility are frivolous and is thereby struck out.

The two parties before the court had approached the court to be joined as defendants in the suit. While Mr Adegoruwa premised his application on the grounds that he is a pro-democrat who wants to ensure that all parties are granted equal rights, Mr Uwa told the court that his application is on the grounds that General Buhari is his candidate in the 2015 presidential elections and if he is disqualified he will be disenfranchised.Buhari’s eligibility to contest in the forthcoming elections has been a bone of contention since he emerged the All Progressives Congress’ candidate.

David Luiz says sorry for celebrating after scoring vital goal against old club Chelsea

Paris Saint-Germain goalscorer David Luiz apologised for celebrating his goal against former club Chelsea as the English side exited the Champions League following a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea were eliminated as the tie went into extra-time as 10-man PSG twice came from behind to win an ill-tempered last-16 tie on away goals. The first leg was drawn 1-1 and Chelsea's advantage grew when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off after 31 minutes.

Gary Cahill's strike nine minutes from the end of normal time was cancelled out by former Chelsea defender Luiz, but the hosts went ahead for a second time through an Eden Hazard penalty early in extra-time.PSG captain Thiago Silva, who conceded the spot-kick for handball, was denied from a corner by Thibaut Courtois but then netted with a header moments later to make it 2-2 on the night and send the visitors through.'I think we played a great game,' Luiz told Sky Sports 5. 'When we lost Ibra, our best player, you say "keep it simple". Play the ball to feet and keep possession as we need to score to qualify. It was amazing tonight the spirit. Every single player gave everything.

'I finished at Chelsea and then I got a great opportunity from PSG - they gave me a great opportunity to continue my career and I was very happy at Chelsea and won titles here but I finished and then I respect everyone.'It was good for me to score. I said before I didn't celebrate but there as so much emotion I cannot control (it) and sorry because I celebrated because of the emotion but I am so happy to qualify.'

'It's difficult for me to live without titles. I need to feed myself with titles' - Jose Mourinho after Chelsea's Capital One Cup triumph on Sunday
Well, fortunately for the 'Special One', he's not had to live without titles for too long at any stage of a glittering career that has seen him bring success and silverware to Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
The 2-0 win over Tottenham at Wembley was the 21st major trophy of Mourinho's career and means he has collected a winner's medal on average every 35 matches during his career.
But how does the Chelsea boss compare with the greats of football management on that score?

JOSE MOURINHO
Matches: 727 Trophies: 21 - Trophy every 34.6 matches
The Portuguese has enjoyed success everywhere he has managed, starting with delivering two league titles, the UEFA Cup and the Champions League to Porto at the beginning of his career.
Arriving at Chelsea in 2004, he proclaimed himself the 'Special One' and was able to live up to his reputation with two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
Similar success followed at Inter Milan, whom he led to two Scudettos, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League in 2010.
Mourinho found things more difficult at Real Madrid but did claim the league title in 2012 and the Copa del Rey in 2011.
The Capital One Cup success last weekend was his first piece of silverware since returning to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2013.

Group Holds Solidarity March For Troops Fighting Boko Haram

Dozens of Nigerians on Saturday marched round the nation’s capital, Abuja, to show solidarity for the Nigerian and Multi National Forces fighting the Boko Haram insurgents in the north-east.
The organisers of the march, Support Our Troops Foundation, said they were motivated especially by recent success reports of reclaimed territories by the troops in the heightened counter-terrorism offensive launched against the insurgents.
They are hopeful that such show of solidarity would boost the morale of the troops in the ongoing fight to root out the Boko Haram terrorists from Nigeria.
According to the founder of the group, Funmi Ogbue, the support was not just for the Nigerian troops. He said it was also a show of solidarity for the multinational troops battling the insurgents from their boarders. “Never Again”

The group ended the march at the Army Headquarters, where the army spokesperson, Major General Chris Olukolade, showed appreciation for the solidarity march, describing it as a morale booster.
Major General Olukolade said that the solidarity walk would spur them for more results, assuring the group that “never again will reclaimed territories fall to the insurgents”.
The troops have recorded remarkable successes in the last one week, reclaiming over ten communities from the insurgents.
The march and other gestures from the government and the citizenry are expected to give more boost to the morale of the troops in their efforts to crush the Boko Haram.
On Friday, the Nigerian military recaptured more towns in Adamawa and Yobe States, keeping it free for the residents to return to their homes.
The Defence Headquarters said troops flushed out Boko Haram terrorists from Gulag, Madagali Local Government Area in Adamawa State and Bara in Gulani LGA in neighbouring Yobe State.
“Troops have finally routed terrorists from Bara, the Headquarters of Gulani Local Government Area of Yobe State and Gulag, the Headquarters of Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State in the early hours of today, Friday .
“The fierce fighting that preceded the clearing of towns and other communities resulted in appreciable casualties on the terrorists, the capture of some of them, the recovery and destruction of arms, thousands of assorted rounds ammunition as well as vehicles and other equipment including; Anti-Aircraft Guns, General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), Grenades, Multi-barrel bombs, Multi-barrel Grenade Launchers, rifles and mortar guns,” a spokesman for the military, Major General, Chris Olukolade, said in a statement.
Other locations also cleared in the course of the two days operation include, Shikah, Fikayel, Tetebah, Buza, Kamla and Bumsa.

Jonathan promises to reward soldiers fighting Boko Haram

President Goodluck Jonathan Thursday in Mubi, Adamawa State and Baga, Borno State applauded Nigerian troops for proving their mettle once again through the rapid recapture of territories formerly held by insurgents in the country’s North-Eastern states.
He assured the soldiers that they wouldl be duly rewarded for their bravery and patriotic service to the nation at the successful conclusion of ongoing operations against Boko Haram.
Addressing officers and men of the Nigerian Army in both towns, which were recently recaptured from Boko Haram, President Jonathan declared that he and all Nigerians were very proud of the bravery, competence and patriotism with which they were now undertaking operations to expel the insurgents from all parts of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.
The President said that with their recent successes, which have overwhelmingly turned the tide against Boko Haram, the Nigerian military has proven beyond any doubt that it remains fully capable of defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria.
The military’s recent victories against Boko Haram, President Jonathan told the troops, have also proven conclusively that all those, within and outside the country, who cast aspersions on Nigerian soldiers and questioned their ability and willingness to overcome the insurgents were misinformed and wrong.
Mr. Jonathan, who was accompanied on the trip by the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki and all the Service Chiefs, assured the troops that the Federal Government would ensure they received all the equipment and logistics they require to complete the ongoing mission to reassert government’s effective control over all areas formerly held by Boko Haram.
The President promised the soldiers that all issues pertaining to their welfare will be properly and expeditiously addressed.
Families of soldiers who had sadly lost their lives in battles against Boko Haram would also be well provided for, the President further assured the troops.
The soldiers responded to the President’s address with chants of “Never Again” and assured him that insurgents and terrorists will never again be allowed to take and hold any Nigerian territory.
While in Mubi, President Jonathan, accompanied by the Governor of Adamawa State, Bala Ngilari and the Minister of Youth Development, Bonnie Haruna, paid a courtesy call on the Emir, Isa Ahmadu.
He assured the Emir that the Federal Government would do all within its powers to ensure that normalcy was speedily returned to Mubi and other towns and settlements recently recaptured from Boko Haram to enable displaced persons return to their homes in the shortest possible time.
President Jonathan also undertook an aerial inspection of other towns and areas recently recaptured from Boko Haram including Monguno.
Before returning to Abuja, the President met and conferred with the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, in Maiduguri.

Lionel Messi celebrates girlfriend Antonella Roccuzzo's birthday with family selfie

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has been enjoying his downtime by celebrating the birthday of his long-time girlfriend Antonella Roccuzzo.
The 27-year-old forward took to Instagram to upload a family selfie, featuring the couple and their son Thiago.
And it was all smiles in the Messi household from the three of them on Thursday, as he captioned the snap: 'Feliz cumple mi vida', or 'Happy birthday my life'

Messi was in action as recently as Tuesday night, when his Barcelona side beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie.
Despite an excellent performance as strike partner Luis Suarez scored both goals for Barcelona, it was ultimately a night to forget for Messi as he saw his last-minute penalty saved by Joe Hart.
And he is set to be in action again on Saturday, as Barcelona head to Granada in hope of securing the three points that will help close the gap on La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

Ronaldo and Co celebrate with Ancelotti and Casillas as Real boss takes charge of 100th game and keeper plays 500th La Liga match

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti and Iker Casillas had reason to celebrate in training on Wednesday as the boss and captain were presented with commemorative shirts for their milestones with the club.
Ancelotti was celebrating his 100th game in charge at the Bernabeu, while Casillas was celebrating his 500th La Liga game between the sticks, both of which came during the 2-0 victory away at Elche on Sunday.
Madrid's boss, who was presented with a shirt with his name and '100' on the back by club president Florentino Perez, has won the Copa del Rey, the Champions League, the Spanish Super Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the World Club Cup during his century of games in charge.

Ancelotti also recorded his 78th win over Elche to help him eclipse Jose Mourinho as the most successful Real Madrid manager after 100 games. The former boss, who was in charge at the Bernabeu between 2010-13, recorded 77 victories in his first 100.
Third on the list is legendary figure Miguel Munoz, who won 70 of his first 100 - as well as three European Cups as a player and two as a manager between 1955-66 -  fourth is Jose Villalonga (64 wins) and fifth is Leo Beenhakker (63).
Casillas, meanwhile, marked his 500th La Liga game in charge with a clean sheet at Elche, and was also presented with a shirt by Perez. The Spanish goalkeeper has been a regular at Madrid since making his debut in the 1998-99 season.
'I am thankful, this record is not easy to get being a Real Madrid player, maybe in another club it would have been easier,' said Casillas, after the game on Sunday. 'I never thought about reaching a certain number.'
While Ancelotti added: 'I think that if we've done well in my first 100 games, then we'll try to do even better in the next 100.'
Casillas has seen his place come under increased scrutiny this season after a series of high profile errors. He has come under pressure from summer signing Keylor Navas while the club have also been linked with a move for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.
The 24-year-old Spaniard, however, is closing in on a new long-term deal at Old Trafford and manager Ancelotti has made clear he is more than happy with his current goalkeeping options.

Real Madrid currently sit four points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga after Barcelona slipped up at home against Malaga a day before their victory over Elche, but their Italian boss fully expects the title race to go to the wire.
As well as topping the La Liga table, Real Madrid also look set for progression to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after their comfortable victory over Schalke in the first leg last week.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring last Wednesday night in Germany before Marcelo added a second after half time as Ancelotti's side continued their European title defence.
They welcome Roberto di Matteo's side to Madrid in two weeks time for the second leg that should be all but a formality. Before that game, however, they still have two league games to concern themselves with. They face Villarreal at home on Sunday before travelling to Athletic Bilbao the following Saturday.

Ten-year-old is accepted on university course to study maths degree despite not going to school

She spends her spare time in a similar way to many other ten-year-old girls - playing with Barbie dolls and making loom bands.
But the key difference between Esther Okade and other children her age is that she has been accepted to study for a university maths degree - despite not going to school.
Esther, from Walsall, West Midlands, has enrolled on an Open University course months after she passed her A-levels - and wants to study for a PhD before running her own bank.
The girl, who gained a C grade in her maths GCSE aged six, has joined the course which started this month. Her younger brother Isiah is already studying for his A-levels - also aged six.
The siblings are both home-schooled by their mother Omonefe, who has converted the living room of their semi-detached, three-bedroom house into a makeshift classroom.
Mathematician Mrs Okade, 37, said: ‘Esther is doing so well. She took a test recently and scored 100 per cent. Applying to the university was an interesting process because of her age.
‘We even had to talk to the vice-chancellor. After they interviewed her they realised that this has been her idea from the beginning. From the age of seven Esther has wanted to go to university.

She said: ‘For now we want her to enjoy her childhood as well as her maths. By the time she was four I had taught her the alphabet, her numbers, and how to add, subtract, multiply and division.
‘I saw that she loved patterns so developed a way of using that to teach her new things. I thought I would try her with algebra, and she loved it more than anything.’

Esther stunned her parents last year when she achieved a B grade in her pure maths A-level.
She applied to the Open University last August - and after a phone interview, an essay and an exam, she was told in December that she had been accepted onto the course.
Mum, I think it is about time I started university now
What Esther Okade told her mother
Her father Paul, 42, a managing director, added: ‘I cannot tell you how happy and proud I am as a father. The desire of every parent is to see their children exceed them, and take the family name to great heights, and my children have done just that.’
In 1981 Ruth Lawrence, of Brighton, became the youngest person to pass the exam for Oxford University, as a ten-year-old - and graduated aged 13 with a first-class degree in maths.
Now aged 43 and a married mother-of-two, Mrs Lawrence is an associate professor of maths at the Einstein Institute of Mathematics, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

12 Killed In Kano Motor Park Explosion

An explosion has gone off at one of the busiest motor parks in Kano, residents and security officials have told HAKEEM'S BLOG
An unknown number of people are feared dead in the blast, which occurred at Kano Line, located at Naibawa Area, along Zaria Road.
The explosion sounded at about 3:15 PM with thick smokes immediately billowing towards the sky and residents scampering for safety.
The vicinity of the scene of the incident is now deserted as security agencies and aid workers try to evacuate injured people to hospital, our correspondent says.
Residents fear heavy casualty “because of the the busy nature of the garage”.
Details are still sketchy and the Police in the state are yet to make any comment on the incident.
The spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, Magaji Majiya as well as the Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Idris, did not answer or return calls.
Details of the incident will come in our subsequent updates
The Kano incident happened hours after a suicide bomber killed over 20 people at a motor park in Potiskum, Yobe State.
An official involved in rescue activities at the scene of the blast also said over 30 others were‎ injured and were  being taken to the hospital.
“The bomber disguised as a traveller going to Kano. He even took his seat inside the car before detonating his ‎explosive-laden vest,” the aid worker said, preferring anonymity because he is not permitted to talk on the matter.

Premier League fury at 2022 World Cup final proposed for TWO DAYS before Christmas

The FIFA task force responsible for picking the dates of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have provisionally proposed it should run from November 26 to December 23 - sparking fury from the Premier League.
While it was long anticipated that the task force would recommend a November-December tournament - the specific dates still have to be ratified by FIFA’s executive committee (ExCo) next month - official confirmation of the general plan is already causing shock and anger.
Premier League chief Richard Scudamore, part of the task force, expressed his anger and disappointment at the decision.
'Yeah, very disappointed that`s the word, I think, on behalf of the all the European leagues and particularly the European clubs who provide most of the players for this World Cup,' he said after the meeting in Doha on Tuesday.

‘The idea that we turned up (on Monday), it was a pretty short meeting, to be told that it is going to happen in November and December is very disappointing.
‘We had a consistent position all along and for the integrity of the Football League to have to stop for six or seven weeks is less than ideal.’
Scudamore claimed others were able to protect their competitions, while Europe's leagues had to give up space in their calendar and nobody else is ‘giving much up’.
He said: ‘FIFA keep their international dates, they keep their World Cup intact, even UEFA, who, I think, let us down a little bit, clearly pushed this ... so their Champions League can start and carry on again, just like it always does.’
Scudamore also claimed that there was little discussion during the meeting. ‘We were pretty much told, hence the disappointment,’ he added
Karl-Heinz Rummenige, chief executive of Bayern Munich and chair of the European Club Association, has also suggested that top European clubs could demand compensation over the disruption to their seasons.

Meanwhile, FA chairman Greg Dyke said a November/December tournament was 'the best of the bad options', but warned of the disruption it would cause to domestic football.
'It will clearly disrupt the whole football calendar as it means club football stopping at the end of October,' he said.
'You might be able to keep the disruption to one season if you start earlier and end later but it's going to be tough - and unnecessary because we would not be doing this if FIFA had done their work properly.'
'This is something FIFA brought on itself by not reading the report of the safety inspector. It tells you the technical assessment was not being used as the basis for the decision.'
Asked about the final being held as late as December 23, Dyke added: 'We will have to wait to hear the detail but we will try to protect all the traditional Christmas dates.

'We were of the view that November/December would be better than January/February - but that wouldn't be the case for some European countries who have a winter break in January.'
The awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar has been dogged by controversy ever since FIFA’s ExCo made that decision in December 2010.
Allegations of widespread collusion and corruption overshadowed the process from the beginning. Multiple ExCo members from 2010 have since left surrounded by allegations of corruption. A report by investigator Michael Garcia remains secret, unpublished and subject to dispute between its author and FIFA.
The tournament was never intended to be played any time other than summer 2022. And yet Qatar remain on course - extraordinarily - to stage the event, albeit in winter.

The task force was convened after it became apparent that dangerous summer temperatures in Qatar in summer 2022 would make it unsafe for the players - and fans.
Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa, who is the head of the Asian Football Confederation and head of the task force confirmed on Tuesday that November-December 2022 has now been recommended as the ideal time for the event.
He says all options will be reviewed by the task force recommendation which is expected to be ratified by the ExCo.

‘Some people have concerns, but whatever decision you're going to take will have some questions about it,’ Sheikh Salman said. ‘But we need to look at the overall benefit of everybody.’
The tournament will be shorter than usual by a few days but will remain the same size as currently, with 32 nations playing 64 matches.
The decision is sure to cause a huge furore, not least as the major leagues of Europe, who provide the majority of players to any World Cup finals, voice their opposition to a schedule that will smash a hole in the middle of their domestic calendar for the 2022-23 season, and disrupt seasons either side.
A World Cup in January and February 2022 was ruled out to avoid a clash with the Winter Olympics.
The European Clubs’ Association of the major sides in Europe wanted a May-June tournament but that has been rejected for reasons unconfirmed. The Premier League remain opposed to a winter World Cup with a spokesman saying: ‘The 2022 World Cup was bid for and awarded to Qatar as a summer tournament. The prospect of a winter World Cup is neither workable nor desirable for European domestic football.’

Liverpool Step-up Bid For Cech

Liverpool FC has revealed its intentions to step-up bid for Chelsea FC’s Goalkeeper, Petr Cech, source said.
Petr Cech 32, who is arguably one of the world’s top 10 goalkeepers, could barely get a game this season, because Thibaut Courtois looks like he may well become Chelsea’s best goalkeeper.
Cech was Chelsea’s No.1 goalkeeper for 10 years and he is believed to want a move away from Stamford Bridge, after losing his place to Thibaut Courtois, who returned from a highly successful loan spell at Atletico Madrid. As Courtois is just 22, Cech may face a long wait to get back his starting role at Stamford Bridge. With that in mind, the first goalkeeper to end a competitive game unbeaten, at the new Wembley Stadium, could well leave the club this summer. Source reported that Liverpool, Napoli and Roma were all considering bids for the Czech international.
Simon Mignolet has impressed between the sticks at Anfield since being dropped earlier this season, but coach Brendan Rodgers would surely love to add a goalkeeper of Cech’s experience and ability to his squad.Liverpool would have to likely rival bids from the two Serie A sides, but Cech is settled in England and Liverpool are likely to offer a bigger deal, considering the new British TV rights deal kicking in next year.

Emmanuel Adebayor takes £360,000 Rolls-Royce to Tottenham training as out-of-favour striker shares Instagram picture

Emmanuel Adebayor might not be attracting much attention on the pitch but the out-of-favour Tottenham striker was sure to be turning heads when he turned up for training on Monday.
The Togo forward arrived in style when he drove a £360,000 Rolls-Royce to the club's Enfield base as the team began preparations for the second leg of their Europa League tie with Fiorentina on Thursday night.
Adebayor posted a picture to his official Instagram page of him standing next to the Phantom Drophead Coupe model on Monday before setting off for training.
'This morning's ride to training, travel in style and ready to work! Have a good week guys,' Adebayor wrote on Instagram.
The former Arsenal frontman later posted another picture after training had finished of him sat in the back of the car as he showed his friend around London.
Adebayor has only started once for Spurs - in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg against Sheffield United - since November and has not even been named as a substitute since the club failed to offload him in the January transfer window.
The 30-year-old was keen to move to West Ham on loan for the rest of the season but the transfer was blocked by chairman Daniel Levy.
Adebayor began the season as Spurs' first-choice striker but has now fallen behind Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado in the pecking order.
But the striker could be called upon in the coming games with Tottenham enduring a busy schedule over the next fortnight.
Mauricio Pochettino's side are bidding to reach the last-16 of the Europa League, claim the first silverware of the season when they face Chelsea in the Capital one Cup final on Sunday and remain in the hunt for a top-four finish.

Imo Guber 2015: A three-horse Race between Okorocha, Ihedioha, Ihenacho

The race to Douglas House, Imo State Government’s seat of power, is between three major contenders. They include the incumbent and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Rochas Okorocha, Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Emmanuel Ihenacho of the All Progressives Grand Alliance. But some dark horses may spring surprises.
A lot of factors will determine who eventually wins the governorship crown in the state. The factors include the personality of the candidates, their antecedents, achievements and zoning.
The sitting governor, Mr. Okorocha has been campaigning on the basis of his achievements. He claims to have surpassed all former governors of the state including the legendary late Sam Mbakwe, who ruled the old Imo State which included Abia and part of Ebonyi states.
In one of his campaign billboards, he declared, “We never knew that a government could do much.” Mr. Okorocha’s confidence is that he had asphalted more than a 1000KM of roads across the state, built 305 classroom blocks in the electoral wards of the state; and 27 brand new general hospitals in each of the 27 local government areas.
Mr. Okorocha’s administration has also built the Ecumenical Centre, Douglas Sourvenir House, Freedom Square, Hero’s Square, Bongo Square, renovated the former Legislators’ Quarters, etc.
He has equally renovated the Government House, particularly the Sam Mbakwe Executive Council Chambers to the point that the Mayor of Okigwe Zone, Nduka TonyBlack, flew off the handle by berating the immediate past administration in which he played a prominent role for non-performance during its four years in office.
The free education programme of the Okorocha administration is another plus to his campaign. The Ogboko-born businessman-turned politician declared free education from primary to secondary schools at the inception of his administration. Later, he added free tuition at the tertiary level particularly in state-owned higher institutions, first for indigenes and later included non-indigenes. His novel Community Government Councils, CGCs, are equally believed to have boosted his profile owing to the perception that the innovation has brought dividends of democracy to the ordinary people at the grassroots.
There is also the pet-project of his wife, Nneoma Okorocha, She Needs a Roof Project, SNARP. Ms. Okorocha has through the project built, furnished and donated more than 100 houses to indigent widows. This has impacted greatly on the well-being of the beneficiaries to the extent that even critics congratulate her. Some organizations have honoured Mrs. Okorocha with awards for the impact of the SNARP intervention.
A smart Okorocha, in a bid not to rock the boat, chose to retain his deputy, Eze Madumere, as his running mate. Mr. Madumere hails from Owerri Zone which believes it is its turn to occupy the Government House at the moment. Mr. Madumere was chief of staff to Mr. Okorocha for 18 years before he became the governor. He also served in the same capacity from 2011 to March 2013 before Mr. Okorocha’s first deputy, Jude Agbaso, was impeached over allegation of contract kickback. The chemistry between Mr. Okorocha and Mr. Madumere is amazing.
The parents who no longer pay school fees in primary and secondary schools and the students who are training themselves in state-owned tertiary institutions like Imo State University, Owerri, Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, and School of Health Technology, Amaigbo, without paying tuition, will be reluctant to listen to the opposition which submit that standard has fallen following the non-payment of tuition fees.
They are afraid that Mr. Okorocha’s exit will lead to the reintroduction of tuition fees which they were grappling to pay before the administration came in. A 100-level Bio-Chemistry student, Judith Echefu, said she would prefer Mr. Okorocha retains his seat so she won’t be required to pay tuition fees throughout her stay at IMSU. Her stand is not different from Chukwudi Sopuruchi, another student of the university who hinted that he is afraid that a new governor would re-introduce fees at the institution.
While Mr. Okorocha’s free education has increased school enrolment, the performance of Imo students in external examinations has nosedived in the last three-and-half years. While Anambra and Abia states are front-runners in the external examinations, Imo State is lagging behind. This situation is a sad commentary on the free education programme of the government. The PDP standard bearer, Mr. Ihedioha, told journalists last yuletide that the education system has been debased to the point that the state no longer has adequate and qualified teachers in core subjects like Mathematics and English Language including the sciences. He pledged to restore the lost glory of Imo State in the area of education.
Another factor that will work seriously against Mr. Okorocha is the issue of zoning. Even his Orlu kinsman, Elvis Agukwe, believes that it is not their turn to produce the governor of the state. On May 29 this year, when Okorocha will wind up his first term, Orlu Zone would have chalked up 12 years on the saddle in this democratic cycle. His kinsman, Achike Udenwa ruled from 1999 to 2007, a record which no other Imo person holds.
Okigwe Zone sought to complete what it sees as its turn by doing another four years through Ikedi Ohakim, who was governor of the state between 2007 and 2011. Unfortunately, Mr. Ohakim was not favoured in the contentious primary held by the PDP on December 8, 2014. So, re-electing Mr. Okorocha for another four years is what most Imo people are not comfortable with as it would give Orlu Zone a total of 16 years when Owerri Zone is yet to have a shot at the governorship seat since 1999.
Mr. Okorocha’s re-election may suffer a blow because many also see him as running a nepotic government. The APGA candidate, Mr. Ihenacho publicly derided Mr. Okorocha recently for this. The governor’s lack of respect for the rule of law which had put him at loggerheads with some persons and institutions will work against his re-election. For instance, the elected council chairmen were reinstated but Mr. Okorocha ensured they never resumed. Again, a prominent monarch he removed, Cletus Ilomuanya, was reinstated as Chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers by the Appeal Court but the governor frustrated his resumption.
The governor is today seen as a man who is carrying an elephant on his head and at same time dragging a grasshopper with his toes. While contesting the APC presidential primary, he handed over the gubernatorial ticket to his son-in-law and Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Urban Planning, Uche Nwosu, to hold in trust for him. As soon as he lost the presidential primaries, Mr. Nwosu relinquished the governorship ticket to him in absentia at a kangaroo primary poll held in Owerri, citing personal reasons.
It is also worthy of note that taps even in Owerri, the state capital dried up immediately Mr. Okorocha assumed office as governor and have never run ever since. As a result, Owerri residents have been drinking borehole water which quality is suspect. Discerning voters are likely to cast their ballot against him on this score.
His party, the APC is another sore point in his candidacy. The party is not flying in the South-east zone, Imo State inclusive. The APC is seen as more of a tribal party with Yoruba and Hausa coloration. A former commissioner in Mr. Okorocha cabinet, Obinna Duruji, had openly said, “Even our Lord Jesus will find it difficult to market APC in the South-east zone,” shortly after the governor joined the APC.
The PDP flag bearer, Emeka Ihedioha and his running mate, Chuma Nnaji, are strong contenders to the Douglas House and if they win will become the government of deputies. Mr. Ihedioha is the deputy speaker of House of Representatives and is doing his third term, while Mr. Nnaji is a former deputy speaker, Imo State House of Assembly between 2003 and 2007. He has also served as commissioner in the state.
Viewed from any angle, both are experienced politicians. They have legislative experience which in a democracy is the most important because the legislature is the hub of democracy. Mr. Nnaji is also older than Mr. Ihedioha and will provide the necessary buffer to stabilize the government. Unlike what currently obtains in the state, Mr. Ihedioha is not likely to act as an emperor because he requires the maturity of Mr. Nnaji to operate properly if their ticket sails through. Certainly, Ihedioha scored a bull’s eye in his choice of running mate.
Another factor that will play in to his favour is the zoning issue. He is from Owerri Zone which majority agree should produce the next governor of the state. Also, his Mbaise home is a large voting population. Mr. Ihedioha’s empowerment programmes for youth and women across the state will also work in his favour. For the beneficiaries of the empowerment programmes, the February 28 will be a pay-back time.
Somehow, Mr. Ihedioha’s governorship project seems not to be flying especially among the grassroots. The deputy speaker is seen not as a grassroots politician. He is not close to the ordinary people. In fact, some people say he is arrogant. Again, the process that threw him up as a candidate is likely to adversely affect him unless he mends fences before the election.
A PDP chieftain, Ifeanyi Araraume, is still laying claim to the same mandate. Mr. Araraume has insisted he won December 8 governorship primary and could do everything to frustrate Mr. Ihedioha on February 28.
The APGA candidate, Mr. Ihenacho, is also a businessman with chains of companies. He is the chief executive officer of Integrated Oil and Gas Company. He also owns a fleet of ships and recently veered into aviation. Mr. Ihenacho is believed to have a fat purse acquired from the private sector. He is promising to create jobs for Imo’s teeming unemployed youth.
His running mate, Ike Ibe, is a lawyer and former member of Imo State House of Assembly. It is reported that he rose to be speaker of the state legislature while in his mid-20’s. He was also the state’s trade representative to United States during Mr. Udenwa’s administration.
Mr. Ihenacho is from Emekuku in Oweri-North Local Government Area. His candidacy is favoured by the zoning fervor. But he is not likely to be campaigning with full confidence due to ongoing litigation against his candidacy. The APGA flag bearer was dragged to court by Okey Ezeh, who challenged his eligibility to contest the governorship race. The matter is still pending in court.
Mr. Ezeh is the candidate of another faction APGA in the state. The two factions of the party held primaries in December that produced Mr. Ihenacho and Mr. Ezeh as governorship candidates. In spite of Mr. Ihenacho’s listing as the APGA candidate by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mr. Ezeh has continued to lay claim to the party’s authentic ticket.
The dark horses in the race are Ken Ojiri of the Accord Party and Osmond Imo Ukanacho of the United Progressive Party, UPP. With the internal wrangling in the PDP and APGA, the disapproval of Mr. Okorocha, a man from Orlu Zone retaining his seat, the electorate may look at the directions of either Mr. Ojiri or Mr. Ukanacho.

Military Releases Video Of Boko Haram Enclaves’ Air Bombardment

The military in Nigeria has released a video of air bombardment of the enclaves of the members of the Boko Haram terrorist group in the north-east, as it continues operations to reclaim areas under the control of the terrorists.
The video released on Monday showed people running in different directions and the aerial bombardment of a community believed to be the hideout of members of the sect.
Spokesman for the military, Major General Chris Olukolade, said the Air Force had stepped up air operations, having identified targets in Gwoza, Bama and Sambisa forest, preparatory to other phases of the mission.
He said: “The air strikes had been successful as they achieved the aims, hitting vital targets with required precision forcing the terrorists to scamper for safety”.
Return Of Residents
Residents of communities in the area had fled the region, seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. Some are at displaced persons’ camps in Abuja, the nation’s capital and some other camps in some states in the north.
Some of the displaced persons in Abuja camp had expressed joy, over the military efforts to decimate the terrorists and reclaim the communities under their country, but they are afraid to return to their communities, saying the terrorists may return.
But Major General Olukolade said the troops were focusing on consolidation of the security of the area to pave way for return of residents.
On Sunday, a group campaigning for the rescue of the over 200 girls abducted on April 14 from their secondary school’s dormitory in Chibok asked the military to substantiate the report of its victory in the ongoing multinational counter insurgency, with video footage that will authenticate such reports.
The Bring Back Our Girls campaigners told a news conference in Abuja on that conflicting reports and lack of evidence had often trailed the claims by the military.
The group said: “while we fully supports the efforts by the military and government’s renewed commitment to decimate the insurgents through the Multinational Joint Task Force, there is the need to ensure that real progress is being made to bring back peace to the north-eastern part of Nigeria”.
While the group lauded government’s efforts, they raised issues such as the delay in commencing this offensive and the continued suggestion from some quarters that the kidnap of the girls and the campaign for their rescue were scams.

Jonathan Meets Presidents Of Congo, Equatorial Guinea

President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria on Monday met with the President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso and the President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Mbasogo and held discussions on issues of common interest to the countries.
The visit by the two Presidents is a consolidation of a decision made by the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), during their summit in Yaunde, Cameroon, on February 16.
The three Presidents reviewed the current security challenges facing some countries of the Economic Communities of West African States (ECOWAS) and Central African Regions, especially terrorism and the menace of the insurgency by Boko Haram.
They unequivocally condemned the insurgency, its destructive activities such as indiscriminate killing of people, the wanton destruction of property, the abduction of innocent women and children, especially young school girls, who had been turned to sex slaves.
The Presidents underscored the imperative of a multi-prolonged approach to fighting the terrorist group and in particular, commended the initiative of the member states of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), for a Multi National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), to combat the Boko Haram insurgency.
They welcomed the active support of the international community, especially the African Union, the United Nations and other partners, for the efforts of the LCBC and the Benin Republic to enable the earliest deployment of the MNJTF.
While underscoring the fact that the MNJTF is wholly owned and driven by the member states of the LCBC, they urged the international community to render necessary material, financial support and assistance to its on-going efforts.
The three Presidents welcomed the proposal to have a joint summit of the ECOWAS and ECCAS to further mobilise international support for the MNJTF.
President Jonathan promised to contact the ECOWAS chairman on the proposal while the visiting presidents promised to relay the positive outcome of the meeting to the other Heads of States and government of the ECCAS.

Buhari is healthier than Jonathan, says Kwankwaso

The Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has stated that the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari is in a better health condition than President Goodluck Jonathan and is therefore, fit to rule Nigeria.
Mr. Buhari, a former Head of State and Retired General of the Nigerian Army, is presently on a working visit to the United Kingdom.
His campaign office had issued a statement Thursday saying in the course of the visit, Mr. Buhari will hold meetings with key members of the British political establishment and interact with some global institutions with interest in the affairs of Nigeria.
“General Buhari would hopefully give a talk at the prestigious foreign policy hub, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatam House in London, the spokesperson for his campaign, Garba Shehu, said.
However, there has been wide speculation by supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, that Mr. Buhari was actually ferried out to receive medical attention because his health was failing.
The Kano governor who had a chat with newsmen in Kano on Sunday said Mr. Buhari has no health challenges.
“By my judgement, since we finished our party primary elections, he is sound, hale and fit to rule this country.
“In fact I feel he is healthier than the incumbent occupier of the seat because he went to all the states on campaigns in addition to other engagements that come in between,” he said.
Mr. Kwankwaso also accused the Federal government and the ruling PDP of sharing money to win the presidential election fixed for March 28.
He said money alone cannot give success in the forthcoming elections.
“The Federal Government and the PDP can use all the money in the treasury to bribe whoever they want, but God, the Almighty, has his own way of doing things.
“Power belongs to Him not to those with money or who control security agencies. Nigerians are wiser,” he said.
On his stewardship as governor, Mr. Kwankwaso said every state governor can work to develop their states unless if they chose to steal instead.
“People are surprised and many are asking questions that where did we get the money to do these projects we are doing in Kano. But the truth of the matter is that – you cannot steal and perform. It is the money for projects that people steal that is why they are not performing. In Kano we don’t steal,” he said.
He enumerated some of the landmark projects he undertook in the state to include the award of an Independent Power Project at Tiga and Challawa-Gorge Dam at the cost of N14.2BN, establishment of one garment factory in each of the 44 local governments in the state and the establishment of a Micro Finance bank also in each of the 44 local governments.
Mr. Kwankwaso also said 44 Schools for Islamic Studies and 44 Technical Schools were built in the state.
“These were with a view to ensure that all our children that finished primary school get space to proceed to have post-primary education
“I feel so fulfilled that our governments as been able to encourage Kano people to accord education the priority it deserves,” he said.

Amaechi, Fani-Kayode trade insults on television

The Rivers State Governor and Director General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, Rotimi Amaechi, and a former Minister of Aviation and Director of Media and Publicity of Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, Femi Fani-Kayode, targeted diatribes at each other Sunday, exchanging abuses on television.
Messrs Amaechi and Fani-Kayode were guests on a Channels Television programme, Politics Today.
Speaking first, Mr. Amaechi had dismissed Mr. Fani-Kayode as someone who “does not have credibility”.
The Rivers Governor was responding to a question from anchor, Seun Okinbaloye, who quoted Mr. Fani-Kayode as alleging that the APC was planning to rig the forthcoming elections.
In response, Mr. Amaechi said, “Fani-Kayode does not have credibility. If the right person speaks, then we will respond. Fani-Kayode lacks the credibility. Let’s move to another issues.”
Mr. Fani-Kayode later came on the programme, following Mr. Amaechi’s departure.
He responded angrily to Mr. Amaechi’s comments, saying the governor was not on the same intellectual and social level with him.
“Perhaps, it is only in Nigeria that a man with his background, in spite of the things he did when he was young; in spite of the things he did when he was in the university, could become a governor. By the way he became governor without even winning an election,” Mr. Fani-Kayode said.
“That’s a man who talks about credibility. That’s a man who claimed pastors in this country were given 6 billion by the government to vote for the PDP. This is a man that went as far as to say if the APC lost the presidential election he would form a parallel government. This is a man that told the whole world that as far as he was concerned he was prepared to do anything to become the vice presidential candidate of the APC.”
He said Mr. Amaechi, because of his vice-presidential ambition, betrayed the PDP, the people of Rivers State and his predecessor, Peter Odili.
He said Mr. Amaechi and other APC leaders found him credible when he was opposing the government as member of the opposition party, which he called “darkness”.
Mr. Fani-Kayode said the presidential candidate of the APC, Muhammadu Buhari, when vying for the ticket of the party, promised him [Fani-Kayode] a key position in his campaign team should he win the ticket.
However, he said he turned down the offer, claiming he told Mr. Buhari “I can never support you General Buhari”.

Christiano Ronaldo Is Third Top Scorer In Real Madrid’s History

Christiano Ronaldo  has scored a total of  290 goals since he started playing in Real Madrid, making him the third top scorer in Real Madrid’s history. Ronaldo has scored in all of the games he has played in the round of 16 stage of the Champions League since the 2011/12 season.
Cristiano Ronaldo began demonstrating his eye for goal since 29 August 2009 against Deportivo, when he got on the score sheet during a 3-2 win in the Santiago Bernabéu. The ease with which the Portuguese man is able to break records means that, in the space of just six years, his name is already being talked about in the same breath as the club’s all-time best players.
Ronaldo kept up his fantastic performance in the Champions League round of 16. Since the 2011/12 season he has scored in all of the matches in this round. In total, that means he has scored in seven successive round of 16 matches.
The run began in 2012 against CSKA Moscow, where Ronaldo scored a goal in a 1-1 game in Russia, and featured again in the return leg by scoring two of the team’s four goals.
Ronaldo was once again decisive in the game against Schalke 04.
A year later, the Portuguese player made a vital contribution in the win against Manchester United in the round of 16.
Ronaldo scored the Whites’ goal in the home leg and got the second goal in the away leg at Old Trafford that sealed through to the next round.
Last season, the Whites had a clear win over Schalke in the round of 16 where Ronaldo scored twice on the night of the 6-1 win and got another brace during the 3-1 win at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The run has continued this year, with the German team once again the opponents. Cristiano has scored five goals against them in three games.
Christiano Ronaldo continues to write his name in the Real Madrid records as he is now the club’s third top scorer of all time. Ronaldo’s header against Schalkebrings the forward’s tally with the Whites to 290 goals, thus equaling Santillana’s record.
The Portuguese star has reached this milestone after 280 games, while the Cantabrian needed 645 matches to do so. The only players ahead of Ronaldo are Raúl (323) and Di Stéfano (308).
