Louis van Gaal admits he is no closer to finding out his best Manchester United formation after seven months in charge

Louis van Gaal admits that he is no closer to discovering Manchester United's best formation after seven months at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal has reverted to a back-four in recent games - despite confessing it leaves him 'twitching my ass' - and a midfield diamond but he has come under fire for playing England striker Wayne Rooney in a deeper role.
Asked if he knows his best system, the United boss said: 'No, I don't think so, and that's also the difficulty of this system.

Van Gaal resisted the temptation to hit back, however, saying: 'I don't worry about that. It's not so interesting.
'Paul Scholes is one of the fans and fans can criticise us, that's not a problem. That's all I have to say on that.
'Me and the players are used to that. They aren't professional players for the first time. Maybe some players are affected but normally no, and me neither.'

Van Gaal had admitted that United were lucky against Burnley and warned that they will go out of the FA Cup to Preston on Monday night if they play as badly again.
At Friday's pre-match press conference, he added: 'I gave my opinion, I am always honest. When it's bad it's bad and when it's good it's good.
'I was not down about the second half (against Burnley). We created more chances than them and football is made for creating chances.

'We have another match to show that we are still in our process and positive.'
Phil Jones and Daley Blind both went off before half-time against Burnley with knee and head injuries respectively, and Van Gaal revealed that both players could be doubtful to face League One Preston, along with Robin van Persie who has an unspecified knock.
He added: 'Jones is not a heavy injury but it will be difficult for him. We'll have to wait and see how Blind recovers and Van Persie has something. I gave the players the day off and only the injured players are in.'

Looking ahead to the fifth round tie at Deepdale after overcoming Yeovil and Cambridge in the earlier stages, Van Gaal said: 'The FA Cup is fantastic. We have to play a lower team for the third time and you know the world is against you.
'Everything is against you because everybody is for the underdog. The chance you can survive is higher because you are playing against lower quality but you have to beat a team with big motivation.'
